GPSA for Health’s Belize program is an intensive cultural and professional experience for high school students and high school graduates with a passion for global issues, and/or health care related career paths. Students will acquire knowledge of a different culture, become more internationally aware and culturally competent, learn how to think creatively and critically, and contribute to the development of a country in need. The students’ GPSA experience begins in their arrival city: Belize City, Belize (BZE airport). Shortly after their arrival, the students will travel as a group to the San Ignacio and Santa Elena region. While there is a significant tourism industry along the coast, San Ignacio and Santa Elena can be found in the interior of the country. Belize is a beautiful, yet impoverished, English-speaking, Central American nation bordering on the Caribbean. Participants not only learn more about global issues, health care in general and health policy issues specifically, but they also get to know a new and different culture, perhaps making some lifelong friends in the process. Participants will be making a difference and starting their careers now!
